Why did my car insurance premium jump 40% at renewal?
#1
I just got my renewal notice and my premium has jumped up by almost forty percent for no reason I can see. I haven’t had any claims or tickets, and my car is a year older. Is this kind of sudden increase normal, or should I be looking for a specific mistake on my paperwork?

I’ve had a similar surprise. No claims, car’s a year older, and the renewal jumped a lot. In my case the insurer had updated their rate table and started weighting things differently (commuting miles, garaging location, and how many drivers were listed). It stung, but it pushed me to request a breakdown and shop quotes.

One time I found a slip in the paperwork—the VIN field was off in the system and the price crept up. They fixed it after I pointed it out, though it took a handful of calls.

Forty percent feels steep, and I’m not sure you can chalk it up to simple luck. Sometimes renewal prices drift after a policy reprice even if nothing changes on your end.

Have you checked the price breakdown or asked to see the factors that went into the renewal?
