Why did my car struggle to merge onto highway, is my engine or gears at fault?

I was merging onto a busy motorway yesterday and my car just didn't seem to have the power to get up to speed in the short slip road. I had to almost stop at the end because a lorry was coming, and it felt really unsafe. Is it normal for a car to struggle like that, or is it a sign something might be wrong with my engine or that I'm not using the right gear?

Yeah, I’ve hit that on a short ramp a few times. The car would feel fine once you’re in the flow, but that moment to get up to speed on the slip could be slow, especially with a heavy load or a truck close by. Usually it’s just a little lag before the power comes in and you’re through.

Could be nothing dramatic. Some cars feel slow to respond on ramps when the drivetrain is trying to save fuel or when it’s lugging under load. If it’s automatic, it might stay in a higher range for economy and then suddenly drop what’s needed; it can feel like a pause before it surges.

I’ve stood by and listened to a few mates talk about clogged air filters, dirty sensors, or weak spark, and it’s all guesswork until you actually test. I didn’t dig into mine, and I’m not sure what I’d check first.

One time I started thinking maybe the issue wasn’t mechanical at all but the road itself. Was the ramp longer than it looked?
