Why did that fantasy movie's final domestic gross lag behind early tracking?

I just saw the final domestic total for that big fantasy movie and it’s way lower than the early tracking suggested. I was really expecting it to cross that milestone based on the opening weekend, but the weekly drops were brutal. Makes me wonder if the audience reception scores actually predicted this better than the initial hype.

Yeah, opening weekend felt buoyant, but the weekly drops were brutal. I watched the totals creep up Friday and then stall through the weekend. It didn’t turn into the kind of legs you need for a milestone.

I compared some pre release tracking notes to the post release chatter and found the audience scores were solid but not explosive. I asked a handful of friends who saw it and they said the film looked great but nothing pushed them to drag others to the theater.

Do you think the real issue is hype versus reception, or could something else be at play like a marketing narrow focus or stiff competition?

I did a quick check against a similar fantasy title that opened big and dropped hard; the pattern matched more than I expected, which makes me doubt the early hype mattered as much as the word of mouth.
