Why do atmospheric novels feel aimless even when the prose is beautiful?

I just finished a novel that was beautifully written, but the plot felt completely aimless, like a series of lovely vignettes that never built into anything. I'm left wondering if a book needs a strong, driving narrative to be satisfying, or if I'm just missing the point of this more atmospheric style.

I read something like that a while back. The prose was gorgeous and the scenes stuck with me, but the plot never felt like it had a destination. I walked away admiring the mood and still wondering what, if anything, was supposed to happen.

I once tried to map a lyrical book by jotting recurring images on notecards and lining them up against chapters. It didn’t reveal a tidy arc, but it did help me see a throughline in mood and motif that I hadn’t noticed before.

Is the real problem that you wanted a driving plot?

Sometimes I stall out on a book like this, then pick it up again at random and let the rhythm carry me. I’ll admit I stopped expecting a chase and instead watched how a single quiet moment keeps echoing later.
