Why do I keep getting password reset emails from services I never signed up for?

I've just had my third "password reset" email this month from a service I don't even remember signing up for. It's got me wondering if my email address is just floating around in a bunch of breached data sets out there, and I'm not really sure what I should be looking for or doing about it.

Yeah this happened to me too. Third password reset this month from services I don’t remember signing up for. It makes you worry your address is floating in breached data somewhere. I started using a password manager to keep unique passwords and I turned on two factor authentication wherever it was offered. I also set up quick filters to ignore or delete anything that looks like a reset from unknown services. It helped a bit, but the emails keep coming.

I try not to overthink it. Maybe someone signed me up with a similar address, or a bot is just tossing random resets at old lists.

I did a quick glance at a couple of the domains and they looked sketchy. I didn’t click any links, just marked them as spam and moved on.

Do you think this is really about data leaks or just a flood of junk signups with old addresses?
