Why do I keep messing up stitches when learning my grandmother's embroidery?

I’ve been trying to learn my grandmother’s traditional embroidery, but I keep getting the stitch patterns wrong. It feels like I’m losing a connection to that part of my heritage every time I have to unpick a section. Has anyone else struggled with learning a family craft and found a way to get past that initial frustration?
