Why do 'just checking in' messages feel so transactional?
#1
I’ve noticed I’m starting to feel genuinely annoyed when someone sends me a “just checking in” message that’s clearly copied and pasted to dozens of people. It makes the interaction feel transactional instead of personal, and I’m not sure how to respond without sounding rude or cynical. Is this just a normal part of digital communication now, or does it bother anyone else?

Yeah, it bugs me too. It feels like mass-produced small talk rather than a real check-in. I tend to respond with a tiny, personal line and then move on.

I started replying with something specific, like asking about a recent trip or project, and it actually sparked a real reply once in a while.

I kept a rough tally for a week: maybe 2 out of 10 messages turned into something longer.

Maybe the real problem isn't the message but my own expectation that every ping should feel personal. Is that the real problem?

I’m not sure if I’m overreacting or if the form itself is the problem. It’s hard to tell.

Sometimes I wonder if the button is the wrong goal—maybe people are just checking a box. Then I remind myself that not everyone wants a deep chat anyway.
