Why do kids think the original Star Wars effects look fake?
#1
I’ve been trying to get my kids to watch the original Star Wars trilogy, but they just can’t get past the effects in A New Hope. They called the lightsabers and the blaster bolts look fake. I remember being completely transported by it as a kid, so it’s a bit disappointing. Has anyone else run into this generational gap with classic movie magic?

We tried showing A New Hope on the living room TV and the kids kept snickering at the glow of the lightsabers and the dusty sets. The modern visuals hit harder, but the music and the scale still land when the ships surge into a space battle.

We followed up with a behind the scenes feature to see the models and puppets in action. The kids were surprised by what was really happening and the sound design carried the scene more than the visuals. They still asked if it was real or fake, which felt honest to me.

Do you think the problem is the effects or the pacing and dialogue? It feels like a mix of both to me and I am not sure which one is turning them off.

We tried to frame it as a different kind of magic and focused on mood rather than tech. The force and the space battles drew attention even if the bolts looked toy like, so the vibe mattered more than the shimmer.
