Why do live bus updates in my transit app keep vanishing and misreporting ETA?

I’ve been trying to use the bus more to get to work, but I keep missing it by a minute or two because the real-time tracking on my app is always off. It says the bus is arriving in 3 minutes, then it just disappears and I find out it already passed. Has anyone else had this happen regularly with their local system’s live updates?

Yeah, the bus ETA is never reliable for me either. It says arriving in 3 minutes, then it disappears and I find out later it already passed. I timed it once and it was about six minutes late. The app feels like it’s chasing a moving target and I end up sprinting to the stop for nothing.

Sometimes I just start with a different plan. I started leaving ten minutes earlier and still got caught out a couple of times, but it helped a bit on days when the timing was off. I looked for a route with a steadier cadence and found that one option is slower on some days.

Have you checked whether the times posted at your stop line up with what the app shows?

I once wandered to the wrong stop because a detour changed the street layout and I assumed the usual corner would work. It was a tiny thing, but it made me late for work and I realized I was chasing timing that’s never guaranteed. Maybe the bigger issue is inconsistent schedules, not just faulty updates.
