Why do my 1440p games drop frames, should i lower from ultra?
#1
I’m trying to get my new 1440p monitor to feel as smooth as my old 1080p one did, but my frames keep dropping in the new games I play. I’m not sure if I should lower some settings from ultra to high or if my GPU just isn’t up to the task anymore.

I upgraded to 1440p and left most games at high instead of ultra. Enabling FreeSync helped a lot with micro stutter, and I saw less tearing. The big hit was still in new titles, but it felt more playable than when I kept everything ultra.

I almost blamed the GPU, but after closing background apps and setting Windows to high performance, I gained a bit of headroom. Not a miracle, but enough to take the edge off in a couple of scenes.

I’m not sure the GPU is the whole story. Sometimes you get frame time spikes even when the average FPS looks okay. I wonder if the real issue is engine optimization or driver quirks more than raw horsepower. Do you know your monitor's refresh rate?

I did a quick test by dialing back one setting at a time and watching the frame time graph. Dropping shadows and crowd detail helped in one title but not in another. It’s a messy process, and I still don’t have a clean answer.
