Why do my synth pads sit on top in the mix, and how can i push them back?

I’ve been trying to get my synth pads to sit further back in the mix without just turning them down. I used a high-cut and some reverb, but they still feel like they’re sitting on top of everything instead of blending into the background. Is there something specific I should be doing with the mid-range to create that sense of depth?

I’d try a tiny dip in the mids on the pad around 500–700 Hz, 1–2 dB, and automate it so it ducks a touch when the kick hits. Also roll the lows with a high-pass around 120 Hz to keep mud out. Depth starts with carving, not more EQ.

Put the pad through a darker, longer reverb and add a small pre-delay so the tail lands behind the dry sound. A parallel dry/wet split on the pad with the effected copy ducked a touch during busy sections can help it sit back.

Try a mid side treatment: reduce center mids of the pad slightly (say 400–1k in mono sum) and keep the sides wide. It makes the pad feel more like a wash instead of a front-stack element.

Question: is the problem really the mid range or is something else crowding the mix? Maybe the kick or bass is stealing the space in ways you don’t notice until you solo the pads.
