Why do old forum threads fade and how can we keep discussions from dying?

I’ve noticed that some of the most interesting discussions on here seem to just fade away after a few replies, even when there’s clear engagement. I’m wondering if part of the problem is how we handle thread bumping. I’m never sure if it’s better to add a new thought to an old thread or just let it go, especially when the original topic feels unresolved.

I’ve tried both adding follow ups and letting quiet threads die. When I posted a fresh thought in an old thread, sometimes people chimed in, but more often it petered out after a day or two. It felt like the initial momentum mattered more than the bump itself.

A few times I pasted a concrete update or a tiny new angle and watched the cadence change—two or three people replied, then silence again. I guess people skim and move on.

Sometimes I wonder if the site algorithm nudges newer threads more, and I end up chasing air in the old ones, which makes me forget why I even brought up bumping in the first place.
