Why do online conversations feel so transactional and data-driven lately?

I’ve been noticing lately that my online conversations feel weirdly transactional, like every interaction is just data for some algorithm. It makes me wonder if we’re losing the ability to have a genuine, messy exchange that doesn’t get measured and fed back to us.

I get that. A while back I noticed the same thing, so I turned off the auto-suggest feature in my chat app and tried sending longer, imperfect messages instead of crisp, tidy replies. It felt clumsy at first, and I caught myself trimming real thoughts to fit a pattern, but there were moments of rough honesty that felt more human.

I kept a tiny mood log after chats to see if the vibe changed. On days I leaned into slower, messier wording, my mood stayed a little closer to real life, even if the thread felt less efficient. It didn’t solve it, but it gave me a sense of what I’m missing.

Do you think the problem is the timing of responses or the way we frame questions in these chats?

I went to a cafe and overheard a loud table talking in circles, which felt messy and alive. It reminded me we don’t have to be tidy to care; but then I came back to the screen and wondered if the feedback loops, the algorithm-shaped expectations, are nudging us toward short, data-friendly exchanges.
