Why do practical effects feel more real than modern CGI?

I’ve been noticing a lot of modern movies where the CGI creatures or effects look too clean and weightless, which completely takes me out of the story. I just re-watched some older practical effects films and the tangible, physical presence of the creatures felt so much more real, even if you could sometimes see the seams. Is that sense of physicality just something we’ve lost with the shift to digital, or are there still directors and VFX houses prioritizing that grounded feel in their work?

I’ve felt that too. The creatures in older films walked like they had bones, even when the seams showed. A lot of that weight came from real frames—animatronics, fur, and the way the actor breathed inside the suit. Spielberg, Cameron, even some practical set work let the camera catch real inertia. When you mix that with CG, you can feel the difference in the air between the frame and the thing.

I did a tiny side project where we built a half-rubber monster puppet and lit it with the same practical lamp the actors used. The shot looked heavier on the monitor, even before any CGI was added. A few VFX folks told me the real trick is tracking real light and not letting the digital stuff steal the shadows and gravity.

Could it be the problem is really pace and sound rather than the renders? When the edit is quick and the score is loud, your brain stops looking for physical cues. If the scene slowed down and the room breathes, the CG feels heavier, or at least more believable.

Sometimes I drift when rewatching and wonder if some filmmakers are still chasing that tangible feel but aren’t sure how to frame it today. A lot seems to be about texture and light, not just the model quality. I’m not sure if that’s the real answer, though, and I’m not sure the next project will solve it.
