Why do we misread sarcasm online so often and how can we fix it?

I’ve been noticing lately how often I’ll see a post or comment that’s clearly sarcastic, but a huge chunk of the replies are people taking it completely seriously and getting angry. It makes me wonder if the way we signal tone online is just broken now, or if I’m missing something.

Yeah I’ve noticed the same. I’ll throw out a dry joke in a thread and half the replies go heated, which makes me wonder if everyone read the same post. I’ve learned to dial back the witty edge after getting called out, and I still can’t tell if it’s me or the room. It feels like there aren’t enough live cues here to share intent.

I’m leaning toward it being a fight between engagement metrics and nuance. The more replies a post gets, the more the algorithm shows it, so witty edges spin into a contest instead of a joke. It’s not just people being serious; it’s the scene rewarding hot takes.

I actually tried adding a tiny cue, like noting it was a joke, and then I watched the thread. Fewer people jumped in angry, but new voices still piled on in other threads.

Sometimes I wonder if we’re missing the real issue because we’re tired or because the chat window feels public and permanent. I’ve accidentally misread a joke, and later realized I was projecting my own mood onto it. Maybe the problem is our mood more than how the words come across.
