Why does knowing how a visual effect was made ruin the magic of a film?
#1
I just watched the director's commentary for a film I love, and now I'm wondering if knowing how a specific visual effect was achieved actually ruins the magic for anyone else. The director explained the surprisingly simple, almost crude practical trick behind a moment I found really haunting, and I can't decide if I'm glad to know the craftsmanship or if I've lost a bit of the wonder.

Honestly, after hearing the director say it was a crude trick, the moment lost a bit of weight for me. I still feel something, but the source changed.

I rewatched the scene with the audio off and tried not to think about how it was made, and the feeling persisted in a quieter way.

Do you think the real issue is your expectations, not the trick itself?

I wandered the kitchen after, then came back and the scene still rings, but for different reasons now, like the memory is a room you can walk back into and it still echoes.
