Why does memory retrieval flip between recall and forgetting after studying?
#1
I’ve been trying to understand why I can recall a specific fact perfectly one day, but then it’s completely gone when I need it a week later, even after what felt like solid studying. It’s making me question if my approach to encoding the information is fundamentally flawed, or if this erratic retrieval is just a normal part of how memory consolidation works.

I know that exact feeling. One day the fact sits in your mind like a stubborn bookmark, and a week later it’s gone just when you need it. I chalk it up to memory being fickle, plus a lot of stress and fatigue. No neat theory helps in the moment.

I tried flashcards and spacing, even kept a tiny notebook of the wins and the misses. I watched the count of successful recaps drop after late nights and long meetings.

I moved the fact onto a sticky note by the door and kept it in the bathroom mirror for a week, hoping a daily glance would lock it in. It helped a little but not consistently; sometimes I’d see it and forget what it meant.

Is it possible the real problem is how we encode it in the first place, or is it just normal ups and downs?
