Why does my brake pedal travel far before braking after sitting?
#1
I’ve been noticing a weird delay when I press the brake pedal in my car lately, like it travels further than it should before the brakes really bite. It doesn’t happen every time, mostly after the car has been sitting for a few hours. I’m trying to figure out if this is just normal brake pedal feel or something I should be worried about.

That delayed bite after it’s sat for a while sounds familiar. My car did something similar once and it felt like air in the lines or a sticking caliper. After a drive and a few pedal pumps it would settle, but it came back.

I’d check the fluid level and look for leaks. A low level or moisture can make the pedal travel farther until the system is pressurized again. I’ve topped up and bled when I could; it helped for a while.

Maybe it’s the master cylinder or booster acting up, but I’m not sure. It’s not something to ignore because a sudden bite would be more worrying.

Do you know if it happens more after cold starts or after it sits in the sun? I’m leaning toward a vacuum booster issue but I wouldn’t bet on it.
