Why does my EV throttle to 80% on public fast chargers?
#1
I’ve been using the public fast chargers near my office, but I keep noticing my car’s battery management system throttling the rate way down once it hits 80%, even if the station itself is capable of more. Is this just how it’s supposed to work to protect the pack, or could something be off with my charging settings or the station’s handshake?

Yep, that’s pretty common. The car’s thermal and battery management usually cap DC fast charging around 80 percent to protect the pack. The charger might be able to push more, but the vehicle intervenes to slow it down.

I noticed it at a couple of public stalls near my office too. It would surge when I first plugged in and then drop the current around 80–85 percent, even though the charger showed higher capability.

Mine has a charge limit setting. I tried nudging it from 80 up to 90, and the taper still showed up, but the peak current stayed a bit higher longer. It just takes longer to reach 90.

Temperature matters a lot. In hot weather the taper is smoother, in cold weather it kicks in earlier and you barely get past 70–75 before the wall slows down.

I even unplugged and replugged once to reset the handshake, and for a minute or two the station seemed to deliver more oomph. Then it paused and settled back into the 80% taper. It felt like a fickle handshake.

Do you really need 100 percent on those public fast chargers for your daily use, or could chasing a full 90–100 be chasing a goal that isn't worth the wait?
