Why does my gravel bike fit cause shoulder and neck pain after an hour?
#1
I’ve been trying to dial in my riding position on my gravel bike, but I can’t seem to get my handlebar height and reach to feel right. I’ve moved spacers and even swapped the stem, but I still get a nagging pain in my shoulders and neck after about an hour.

I’ve been there. I swapped stems, moved spacers, even tried a taller bar, and the shoulders still nag at about the hour mark. It helps a bit for a few minutes, then the tension comes back and I’m staring at the road with a sore neck.

Could it be less about the bar height and more about your torso angle or saddle setback? A tiny tilt in the pelvis or a slightly forward chest can pull the shoulders up and give you neck strain. I’d check if you can breathe easily without tensing up.

I tried riding with a looser grip and trying to stay relaxed through the shoulders. Felt a bit better for a while, then the fatigue came back. Not sure if that was real or placebo or what.

One time I drifted off thinking it was the cockpit and then realized the little things matter too—glove fit, tape worn thin, helmet strap. Not a clean fix, but sometimes the tiny thing changes the feel.
