Why does my top five films list keep changing?
#1
I can't decide on my top five favorite films of all time because my list keeps changing. I finally settled on one as my absolute number one, but then I re-watched it last week and I'm not sure it holds up against that emotional impact anymore. It's making me question my whole personal canon.

That sounds familiar. I pick something as number one and then a couple weeks later it feels like a different person watched it. Maybe the belief about a single must-have list isn’t a seal of truth but a snapshot you take with the year you’re in.

One thing that helped me was keeping a tiny watch log: after each title I wrote a single line about the mood it left me with. The lines moved around over time, and sometimes an old favorite won’t punch as hard but still sits there because of the memory attached.

I’m not sure there’s a single right answer here. Maybe the real problem isn’t the titles but the weight of top five itself, the idea that a list should stay untouched. Is that pressure the real issue?

I drifted away from chasing a fixed list, went on a long walk, and then came back to the idea that a favorite can change without changing what it meant at the moment. The sense that you need to defend a choice still sticks around.
