Why does my wireless mouse keep stuttering even with the receiver right nearby?

My new wireless mouse keeps stuttering or freezing for a second every few minutes, even though the receiver is only a foot away on my desk. I’ve tried different USB ports and fresh batteries, but the intermittent lag persists and it’s really frustrating when I’m working.

I had something similar with a wireless mouse once. It was not the batteries so much as interference from a USB 3.0 device nearby. I moved the receiver to a different port and used a short extension so it sat closer to the mouse and away from cables. It helped a bit, but the blips still came back now and then.

One quick thing I tried was turning off USB selective suspend in the system settings. It didn't fix it forever, but the lag dropped for a while after I did that.

Sometimes I think the dongle itself is flaky. I swapped to a different receiver and the stutter behaved differently for a few days, then nothing was wrong for a while, then it came back.

Maybe it is something else in the PC like a background task or driver hiccup. I ran a few updates and still saw the same issue, so I stopped chasing perfect explanations and just tolerated it for a bit.

What laptop and OS are you on, and what mouse model? I'm curious if there's a common pattern.
