Why does Spyro's draw distance look so bad on PS1?
#1
I just dug out my old PS1 and booted up the first Spyro game. The draw distance is way worse than I remember, with levels just popping into existence a few feet ahead. It’s kind of jarring, but I’m not sure if it’s actually ruining the fun or if it’s just part of the old-school charm now.

Totally felt the same back then. The world would snap into view as I got close, and it was jarring at first but kinda part of the charm after a while.

I plugged it into a CRT and tuned the contrast, and the pop-in still shows up, just less glaring. It felt like peeking through a curtain, not a big deal once you stop overthinking it.

I keep wondering if the actual issue is not the pop-in but pace and level design. Maybe the game wants you to go slow, and the jitters come from that old hardware. Do you think the pop-in is the real problem, or is it just the memory playing tricks?

I tried rushing through a level to see if it mattered, but it slowed me down and I gave up. I ended up wandering, grabbing orbs, and the nostalgia carried me more than the visuals.
