Why does the original series feel moodier than the newer movies?
#1
I’m rewatching the original series and I’m struck by how different the tone feels compared to the newer movies. The quiet, almost melancholic moments between the big robot fights really defined it for me, but that specific mood seems harder to find now. I’m wondering if anyone else feels this shift, or if it’s just my nostalgia coloring my view.

Yeah, I felt the same. When the big mech stuff happens, there's this long quiet breath after a fight, like people are picking up the pieces. That quiet, melancholic tone stood out to me.

I feel the shift too, but maybe it's just how the newer stuff wants to pace big moments differently.

I actually tried to recreate that mood by giving scenes longer pauses and letting the sound design breathe, and I sneaked in a few slower cuts between the fights, but it still felt hollow.

Do you think the problem is the story focus, or the way the fights are framed?
