Why doesn't modern jazz connect emotionally after coming from other genres?

I've been trying to get into more modern jazz lately, but I keep hitting a wall where everything just sounds like background music to me. I put on a highly recommended album from a current pianist, and while it's technically impressive, it just doesn't connect emotionally or make me want to really listen. Am I missing something, or is this a common feeling when you're coming from other genres?

Yeah, I hit that wall too. Coming from rock, the scene felt like fog rather than a song. What helped me was dialing down the virtuosity and letting a track breathe, focusing on mood over technique. I stuck with a few albums that feel like stories rather than blocks of solos.

Sometimes I wonder if the problem is the format, not the music. I tried listening on cheap headphones and it sounded too clinical; then I switched to a small speaker and the colors opened up a bit.

Another time I tried a live recording and the room noise did something soft to the tempo; it made me feel part of it, not just listening.

Do you want me to name a few albums that lean more on melody and groove rather than fireworks, to see if anything clicks?
