Why don't the Statler and Waldorf sketches land for modern audiences?

I was trying to show my kids the old Muppet Show sketch with the two old men in the balcony, Statler and Waldorf, and they just didn’t get why it was funny. It made me wonder if that specific kind of vaudeville-inspired, slow-burn comedy just doesn’t land without the context of its time.

I tried showing them Statler and Waldorf and they just looked puzzled. The slow burn banter felt like a fossil of vaudeville, and without the era's context the punchlines missed.

We pulled up a clip with the setup and the audience reactions first, then watched the lines. Even then I had to keep pausing to point out the timing and the implied sting of the jokes.

Could it be kids today expect a fast payoff and the humor relies on waiting for the sting of the comeback?

I remember trying once and it not landing, then I shrugged and moved on to something else. It felt like the bar was just in a different place.
