Why has the distracted boyfriend meme changed meaning in politics?

Has anyone else noticed that the "distracted boyfriend" meme has completely changed meaning? I saw it used in a political argument yesterday to show loyalty, which is the total opposite of its original joke. It feels weird watching a meme's intent get flipped like that.

Yeah, I noticed too. Memes spread and morph faster than we expect, and the joke rarely survives intact once it lands in a new crowd.

I tried using it once in a casual chat, just as a silly mix up, and people read it as a statement about loyalty or picking sides, which felt off.

Sometimes I wonder if the real issue is our feeds rewarding punchy takes over nuance, or if the image just invites quick verdicts?

I did see the distracted boyfriend image used as loyalty bait in a political argument, which is the opposite joke and feels really off. It makes the meme land differently for sure.
