Why is my grocery bill rising even though I buy the same items?

I’m trying to understand why my grocery bill keeps climbing even though I’m buying the same basic items each week. It feels like I’m constantly adjusting my budget just to cover essentials, and I’m not sure how to make sense of it anymore.

I started keeping the receipts for a month, jotting down the price of each staple. Turns out a few things crept up at different times—dairy, chicken, canned veggies—so even with the same brands, the total was higher. It helped me see where the jumps were, not fix it.

I tried switching to store brands and buying in bulk where it made sense, but the total still climbs, especially with snacks and beverages. Maybe the subtle shifts add up more than the big ticket items.

Do you ever price check across stores or use loyalty discounts, or does that feel like chasing rainbows?

I started meal planning in my head and then drifted into talking about how many impulse buys I almost grabbed. I still end up with a higher bill, but I wonder if maybe I'm chasing variety more than needs.
