Why is my morning stiffness lasting so long with rheumatoid arthritis?
#1
I’ve been managing my rheumatoid arthritis for years, but lately my hands feel stiff and painful for hours after I wake up, even though I take my medication consistently. I’m wondering if this prolonged morning stiffness means my current treatment plan isn’t working as well anymore, or if it’s just a normal fluctuation.

Yeah, I’ve had mornings like that too. Even on steady meds, the hands wake up stiff and sore for hours. Sometimes it feels like a flare, other times it seems tied to sleep quality or stress from the day before. It’s not a clean signal that the plan is broken.

I tried keeping a little log for a few weeks: how long stiffness lasts, pain level, which joints, and how I slept. I noticed a spike when I didn’t sleep well or when I shifted positions a lot at night. It helped me see patterns, not fix it.

I’m not sure it means the treatment is failing, maybe it’s just fluctuation. But it would be worth checking with your rheumatologist to see if your disease activity is higher now or if a tweak is needed. Do you have an appointment coming up soon?

Another angle I chased briefly was other stuff like nerve stuff or tendon irritation. Sometimes mornings felt stiff because of grip or pinching, which isn’t always RA activity. It’s frustrating when you can’t tell what’s what.
