Why is my neighborhood becoming more income-segregated and gentrified?

I’ve noticed my own neighborhood becoming visibly more segregated by income over the last few years, with new luxury apartments on one side and neglected housing on the other. It makes me wonder if this economic separation is quietly undermining any real sense of community or shared responsibility.

I’ve watched the towers go up on one side and the small familiar shops fade to background noise on the other. Block conversations used to spill into the street; now they feel thinner, more scheduled.

We tried a block potluck by the park to bring folks from both sides together. Eight households showed up out of about forty we knocked, a few more wandered in, and after the cleanup it still felt oddly lopsided.

Is the bigger issue the buildings or how we talk about them?

I still walk the same routes and say hi to the few familiar faces, but the chatter is shorter and more practical, like people are just passing through. I’m not sure what to do next.
