Why is my phone battery draining so fast even when i'm on wifi?

My new phone’s battery seems to drain incredibly fast, even when I’m just browsing on Wi-Fi. I’ve only had it for a week, and I’m already having to charge it twice a day, which doesn’t match the screen-on time reviews I read before buying.

That sounds rough. I bought a new phone once and in the first week it behaved, but by day four the power would drop from full to low by early evening even when I wasn’t using it heavily. I started watching the power meter and comparing it to the screen-on time reviews, and it felt off. I found a few culprits like apps waking up in the background and constant syncing. I turned off background data for a couple of apps and limited refresh rates for ones I don’t need, plus I disabled some push notifications during work hours. After that the power held a bit longer, but it wasn’t dramatic. It’s still hard to tell if the issue is normal for this model or something defective.

I actually tried a few quick moves: updated the OS, cleaned one or two apps that looked heavy, and checked which apps were most active in the background. I noticed after turning off a few that used recent data in the background, the power draw felt steadier. I also set the display brightness to auto and kept a conservative refresh rate for apps that don’t need live data. It didn't fix it completely, but the numbers looked better by the evening.

Do you think it’s a software hiccup or a faulty unit? It’s hard to tell over a week, and I worry about returning a new phone so early.

One more thing I tried was just letting the phone sit idle for a few minutes with nothing open and seeing if it still loses power quickly. It did, which made me doubt heavy usage as the only cause. I’m not sure if this points to a defective batch or some setting I haven’t found yet.
