Why is my three-year-old resisting getting dressed in the mornings?

I'm curious how being part of this podcast talk forum has influenced what you listen to and how you engage with podcasts. Have you discovered shows you never would have found otherwise? Has reading discussions here made you pay attention to different aspects of podcast production or storytelling? I know my own listening has become much more intentional since joining.

I’m really struggling with my three-year-old’s sudden refusal to get dressed in the mornings. What used to be a quick routine has turned into a daily power struggle that makes us late and leaves us both frustrated. I’m not sure if this is just a normal phase of asserting independence or if I’m somehow making it worse.

We hit this for a couple of weeks. I offered two outfits and promised a sticker if he dressed himself. It helped a bit, but not consistently; mornings still feel chaotic.

I tend to give a five minute warning and a simple rule: dress now or nothing else happens. It reduces arguing but creates drama the night before.

Maybe he's resisting the clothes because the whole morning pattern is shifting. I tried moving wake time earlier by 15 minutes and letting him wear a favorite T shirt; some days it sticks.

Could this be that the real problem isn't the clothes but the power dynamic? I ask myself that and I still don't know. Sometimes it feels like we both want control and I end up feeling late anyway.

I tried a tiny toy reward; it worked once, then stopped. I keep rough notes: how long it takes to dress, how late we are; it doesn't help predict.

I drifted off topic a bit, thinking about the 'dressing dance' playlist I put on; it buys me a minute here and there, then we circle back to the same pattern.

Maybe the bigger issue is sleep quality; he naps poorly, so mornings are rough no matter what. We tried adjusting nap length and bedtime, but it’s not a magic fix.
