Why is our grocery bill up 30% while salaries haven't moved?

I’m trying to figure out if my family’s budget is just unusually tight or if others are seeing this too. Our grocery bill for the exact same items has gone up over thirty percent in the past year, but our salaries haven’t moved at all. It feels like we’re constantly falling behind just covering basics.

We started a grocery notebook last year after prices jumped. Not science, just writing item, store, price, date. It helped see the trend. We swapped to store brands, bought in bulk when sensible, and planned meals around what was on sale.

Same here. The kids noticed the snack aisle got pricier. We cut out some convenience foods and kept a simple plan. Still not easy, but a bit more predictable.

Have you checked whether your area had higher food inflation lately? It can swing a lot from one neighborhood to another.

I started looking at everything else that crept up too — gas, utilities, and those little extra fees — and it started to look like more than groceries alone.

I tried setting a new baseline for groceries, but some weeks we still overspend. We picked a few non negotiables and tried to skip unplanned buys.

Not sure if the problem is the budget or the job market. Feels like months pass and prices go up while pay stays put.
