Why is the original Deus Ex movement so clunky, and does it improve with time?

I’ve been trying to get into the original Deus Ex for years, but I just can’t get past how clunky the movement and shooting feels. Everyone praises its immersive sim depth, but the moment-to-moment gameplay feels like such a barrier. Does that initial hurdle ever go away if you stick with it, or is it something you just have to accept?

I stuck with it for a while too. the first dozen missions felt like wading through mud, and the guns clunked and slid where I expected precision. what helped was finding a rhythm that matched the game’s pace rather than trying to play it like a modern shooter: walk, aim, pause, plan your route, switch weapons slowly. it never felt silky, but after a lot of grunt work I started to feel the world unlock a little more. not completely modern, but enough to keep exploring.

I ultimately grabbed the GMDX mod and tweaked the movement and weapons balance. with smoother acceleration and a couple of control tweaks, it stopped fighting me so hard and I could actually focus on the stealth and dialog bits. I still hit awkward spots, but finishing it felt doable, not a miracle.

I gave up after a couple of weeks, then came back a year later, and the same feelings hit me again, so I wandered off and played something else.

I remember reading about the original's AI routines and how NPCs can block doors; one night I found myself watching guards walk in circles while the clock ticked. it pulled me out of the action for a bit, which felt annoying, but I kept glancing back at the world building—the way the levels rewarded you for thinking ahead. Eventually I circled back to the controls and tried again, curious if the world would still surprise me.
