Why is the show more options menu stuck in legacy mode on Windows 11?
#1
I just installed a fresh copy of Windows 11 on my desktop, and I’m already running into a weird issue with the new context menu. When I right-click on the desktop or in File Explorer, the “Show more options” legacy menu pops up almost every single time instead of the new compact one, even for simple actions like creating a new folder. I’m not sure if this is a bug from the latest update or if something I installed is forcing it.

Yeah I ran into that after a fresh Windows 11 install. It felt like the new compact menu kept flipping to the old Show more options one even for something as simple as creating a new folder. My first move was to check for updates because sometimes a patch fixes shell glitches. If you’re not on the latest cumulative update, grab it and reboot.

I suspected a third party shell extension might be stepping in. I had installed a couple of file managers and an archiver that add right click handlers. I ran NirSoft ShellExView, disabled non Microsoft handlers, and restarted Explorer. After that the context menu stayed mostly in the new style.

I started wondering if it was just the build or something else in my setup. I even blamed the cache and tried restarting Explorer, logging out and back in, and a quick reset of Explorer’s settings. It still felt flaky, like sometimes the legacy menu appeared for even the smallest action. Not sure if I’m chasing the real cause.

Did you recently install any shell extension or theme pack that might hook into the context menu?
