Why would a director pick a raw take over the obvious one in editing?
#1
I just saw the final cut of a scene I was on set for, and the director used a completely different take than the one I thought was the obvious choice. The one they picked feels less polished, but maybe that raw energy is what they wanted. It’s making me rethink how much an actor’s performance on the day can get reshaped in the edit.

I have had that happen I thought a take was obvious and then the cut kept something rougher yet it felt more alive in the end

In my experience the editor is chasing a cadence not a single line I remember a day when my breath caught in a take and the scene grew bigger because of that pause

Sometimes I misread what the director wants a take felt safe and the cut went for a grittier moment and I am left staring at the screen wondering if I overthought or forgot to bring the right subtext that day

Do you think the director is chasing a film rhythm or was this a one off?
