What's the difference between functional GI disorder and IBS?
#1
I’ve been dealing with what my doctor calls a functional GI disorder for a while now, but I’m still confused about where the line is between that and something like IBS. The symptoms seem to overlap so much, and I’m not sure if the treatment approach I’m on is really the right one.

I’ve been there. The line between functional GI disorder and IBS feels blurry when I read the notes and when symptoms show up after meals. My doctor labeled it functional, but I still panic a bit when the tummy rumbles at work. I started a simple food-and-symptom diary not to chase a label but to notice patterns and trigger points.

On meds and routines, I’ve felt like I’m chasing a moving target. A few weeks with one med, then a different approach, and the numbers don’t line up. I track pain scores and bathroom habits a little, and sometimes it improves, sometimes not, which makes me doubt if we’re on the right track.

Maybe the problem isn’t the gut after all. I keep wondering if stress, sleep, or anxiety are driving these episodes more than anything you eat. Could it be that we’re chasing the wrong problem?

I tried a few nontraditional things, like acupuncture, mindfulness, and then just went back to basics—regular meals, hydration, and gentle movement. None of it felt like a cure, but the part about easing the dread before a meal was real, even if the science behind it isn’t neat in my notes.
